It seems that there are apps out there where developers believe that if the telemetry they use is “anonymous” (is it, really?), that they do not need to disclose to users that they use third party services to collect “information about how their app is used so they can improve it”.
The developers belief that the third party they are paying is truthful in how the data is “anonymized” and how this information is being used somehow absolves them of sharing this information with their customers is deeply flawed.
Developers need to inform users of their choices - and explain their reasoning - and give users the ability to “opt-out” of sharing their usage of the app with others. Or better yet - inform the user, and allow them to “opt-in”, make them feel they are part of the process that can make an app better for themselves and others.
I am sick and tired of apps that constantly “phone home” for no better reason than to make money for third parties, and to waste my network bandwidth.
Communicate with your users, and let them be part off the process to make your application better - or not. It should be their choice - not yours.
